Alappuzha is an important tourist destination in India. The Backwaters of Alappuzha are the most popular tourist attraction in Kerala. A houseboat cruise in these backwaters is a delightful experience. It connects Kumarakom and Cochin towards north and Quilon to the South. Alappuzha is also the access point for the annual Nehru Trophy Boat Race, held on the Punnamada Lake, near Alappuzha, held on the second Saturday of August every year, is the most competitive and popular of the boat races in India.
Alleppey (Alappuzha): Referred to as the Venice of the east, this backwater country with its vast network of Lakes, Lagoons and fresh water rivers is immensely beautiful. Venue for the world renowned snake boat races and famous for coir products.

  1. Kerala Backwaters:

    Giving Alleppey the moniker ‘The Venice of the East’, Kerala backwater canals attract thousands of tourists to Alleppey each year. The snake boat races and the houseboat cruises are a must do activity in Alleppey. Owing to its rich bird and marine life, the backwaters are the best place to try some extravagant seafood.

    Alleppey beach is the perfect place to relax on a quiet and subtle evening. The waters of the Arabian Sea look majestic from the white sandy shores.
  3. Vembanad Lake:

    The longest Lake in India and the largest lake in Kerala, the Vembanad Lake is known by the name Punnamada Lake in Alleppey. The lake covers an area of 2033.02 sq km, making the largest wetland system in India. The lake enjoys rich biodiversity and is home to several marine, bird and animal species. The lake is also home to the annual snake boat racing which must be witnessed.
  4. Nehru Trophy Boat Race:

    The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is a popular Vallam Kali held in the Punnamada Lake near Alappuzha, Kerala, India. Vallam Kali or Vallamkali literally means boat play/game, but can be translated to boat race in English. The most popular event of the race is the competition of Chundan Vallams (snake boats). Hence the race is also known as Snake Boat Race in English. Other categories of boats which participate in various events of the race are Churulan Vallam, Iruttukuthy Vallam, Odi Vallam, Veppu Vallam (Vaipu Vallam), Vadakkanody Vallam and Kochu Vallam. The Nehru Trophy Valam kali is conducted on the second saturday of August every year and is a famous tourist attraction
  5. Pathiramanal:

    Pathiramanal is a small island in[3]Muhamma panchayat of Alappuzha district. The name 'Pathiramanal' means 'sands of night'. The scenic beauty of both sides of the lake as well as that of the island is mind blowing. It is home to many rare varieties of migratory birds from different parts of the world.
  6. Krishnapuram Palace:

    The iconic Travancore style castle, The Krishnapuram Palace was built by Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma in the 18th century. Today the palace is a major tourist attraction and also contains a small museum maintained by the Archeological department of Kerala. Do visit for witnessing the breathtaking Kerala style architecture and several antiquities from the Travancore era.
  7. Kuttanad:

    Kuttanad in Alappuzha, Known as the ‘rice bowl of kerala’ because of its wealth of paddy corps, is the very heart of the backwaters. The scenic country side of Kuttanad with its shimmering waterways also has a rich crop of banana, cassava and yam. And is one of the few places in the world where farming is done below sea level. Four major rivers in Kerala Pampa , Meenachil, Achnkovil and Manimala flow into Kuttanad.
  8. Karumadikkuttan:

    Karumadikkuttan is the endearing name of a Buddha statue found in Karumady near Alappuzha. The name literally means boy from Karumady. This 3 feet tall, black granite statue, believed to be old as 9th to 14th century, was abandoned for centuries in a nearby stream named "Karumady thodu". Later in 1930s, Sir Robert Bristow, a colonial British engineer found the statue, and did appropriate actions to protect it. Currently the statue is under the protection of Kerala state government. Left side of the statue is missing. It is believed that it was destroyed by an elephant. Dalai Lama has visited Karumadi in 1965
  9. Marari Beach

    Mararikulam is connected by rail and has a railway station by the same name. It is also well connected by road. NH 47 passes through S.L.Puram, which is 5 km to the east of Mararikulam. Nearest airport is Cochin International Airport. It was rated as one of the worlds top five HAMMOCK BEACH by National Geographic survey.[citation needed] & The CGH Marari beach resorts has made it to the "Sense of Place" final list of National Geographic Traveller "WORLD LEGACY AWARD" by National Geographic in partnership with ITB Berlin
  10. St. Mary's Syro-Malabar Catholic Forane Church, Champakulam:

    Champakulam Kalloorkadu St. Marys Syro-Malabar Catholic Forane Church is an ancient Christian Church in Kerala. It belongs to the Syro-Malabar Church under the archeparchy of Changanacherry. It is a Forane church, with several Parishes under it.
